Celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Biblioteca Tecla Sala’s “Documentary Blues Collection”

On April 22nd, the Tecla Sala Library’s Assembly Hall hosted the 20th-anniversary celebration of the “Documentary Blues Collection”. The event featured the presentation of Joan Linux‘s photography exhibition alongside the screening of the documentary ’20 Years of the Tecla Sala Library Blues Collection’ by Joan Ventosa. Additionally, the SBB (Barcelona Blues Society) received a donation of a blues video archive coming from Eugenio Moirón with a compilation of a good number of live blues shows in Madrid. Attendees also enjoyed a lecture on the book ‘LGTB Blues’ by Héctor Martínez González, and the event concluded with a performance by the ‘SBB 2026 Combo,’ featuring Tòfol Martínez (guitar and vocals), Sweet Marta (harmonica and vocals), Pep Rius (double bass), and Miguel Ballester (drums).”

In 2006, the SBB board at the time came up with the bold idea of proposing the creation of a ‘Documentary Blues Collection’ to the Tecla Sala Library, intended to serve as the backbone for preserving and promoting the genre. The Tecla Sala Library and the City Council immediately embraced the initiative and have supported the Documentary Blues Collection throughout the years.
The Collection began very humbly with just a few—yet carefully selected—books. It has since grown to hold an impressive collection of over 6,000 items, including books, magazines, CDs, comics, photographs, and other publications available to the public. Through this Collection and in collaboration with the Barcelona Blues Society, the Tecla Sala Library also organizes various blues-related activities such as school concerts, themed lectures, live performances, exhibitions, and book launches.
The Documentary Blues Collection has received official recognition from the European Blues Union (an organization bringing together associations, festivals, bands, media, musicians, and professionals across Europe) as a European blues archive. It stands as the only specialized blues documentary site in Spain and has maintained an ongoing exchange of content with the Bok & Blueshuset in Notodden (Norway). Along with Tecla Sala and ‘La Maison du Blues’ in France, these are the only ones of their kind in Europe
