THE SOCIETAT DE BLUES DE BARCELONA (SBB) ANNUALLY GRANTS THE BIG BILL BROONZY AWARD TO INDIVIDUALS OR ENTITIES REPRESENTATIVE OF BLUES THAT HAVE WORKED FOR THIS MUSIC FOR YEARS, WITH DEDICATION AND PASSION, BY PROMOTING THE LOVE FOR BLUES AND CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIETY WITH A COMMON CULTURAL INTEREST ARTICULATED IN THE BLUES.
HISTORICAL
In 2015, at the 10th Anniversary of the SBB, the association decided to award the most representative individuals or entities in the blues context in the area. The 2015 Award was for Capibola Association, who are the organizers of the Barcelona Blues Festival. The award was given as “SBB Award”. The following year, it was decided to name the award as “Big Bill Broonzy Award”, recalling on the first bluesman who visited Barcelona in 1953 and performed in the city schedulled by the BCN Jazz Hot Club, thanks to the efforts of Alfredo Papo. The 2016 Big Bill Broonzy Award went to the Honky Tonk Bar and consisted on a statuette with a drawing of Big Bill Broonzy and a diploma. In 2017, the official statuette of the Big Bill Broonzy Award was established with the printing of a portrait of Big Bill Broonzy by the artist Pepe Farrés, which that year was dedicated to the musician Quico Pi de la Serra. From then on, the award was established with the official form that each year is given to the recognized members.

The artist Pepe Farrés, author of the Big Bill Broonzy painting that appears in the SBB Big Bill Broonzy Award, donated it altruistically to the SBB. Later, the SBB acquired the painting for the Blues Fund (Biblioteca Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat – Barcelona).
Furthermore, the SBB has also recognized the musician Bob Margolin as the Honorary Member of the SBB since 2010.
In 2013, the SBB awarded Big Mama Montse with an Ukulele in recognition of her 25-year career as a blues artist.
During the SBB 2020 General Assembly, the SBB wanted to pay tribute to three members of the Board who did not renew their positions on the Board and who for years were working to structure the association.
